Questions and Answers on Coaching

How will I know what I really need to work on with my coach?

The 360-degree feedback report is an excellent way to answer this question. Your coach can work with you to identify 6-10 people who interact frequently with you. You can then invite those individuals to meet privately, one-on-one with your coach to provide feedback about working with you. Your coach will analyze the information and identify themes that will be shared with you in a confidential report. This can be a very powerful tool for seeing how you are perceived by those with whom you work.

If you prefer not to do a 360-degree interview process, your coach can help you find other options for clarifying your needs. Written 360-degree surveys are one option; a structured interview with you is another. ILLUMINE will customize this process to meet your needs.

What will my coach do during a meeting?

Your coach will ask you questions about areas of your work where you might want to produce a break through. S/he will help you explore what may be getting in your way of achieving greater results. Expect to be challenged by your coach, but also expect respect.

How often will we meet?

Generally you will meet with your coach twice a month for 60 minutes each time. These meetings will be over the phone or in person. Other options can be arranged based on your specific need.

Is what I discuss with my coach confidential?

Everything you discuss with your coach is confidential within the limits of the law. Your coach may encourage you to share some things with your boss such as your development plan, for example. However the decision on what will be shared will be determined prior to the start of the coaching and the process of sharing will always up to you. ILLUMINE, LLC follows the ethical guidelines as outlined by the International Coaching Federation. A copy of these guidelines will be given to you in the welcome package you receive from your coach.

Will I need to do anything between coaching sessions?

Your coach may give you some practices to try out between meetings. These will be designed to help you be a better observer of yourself and others. Your coach may also recommend books or articles that s/he feels relates to the areas you're exploring.

Will I have to take any self-assessments?

ILLUMINE coaches are certified in a number of self-assessments such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, FIRO-B and others. Understanding your style preference can be very helpful in enhancing your effectiveness. Your coach will discuss these options with you.
